Elastic Block Store (EBS)
Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) provides block-level storage volumes for use with Amazon EC2 instances. EBS volumes are highly available and reliable storage volumes that can be attached to any running instance that is in the same Availability Zone. EBS volumes that are attached to an instance are exposed as storage volumes that persist independently from the life of the instance.
Features of EBS
- EBS volumes are automatically replicated within the same Availability Zone to protect you from component failure.
- You can create snapshots of EBS volumes and store them in Amazon S3, which allows you to back up your data.
- You can create EBS volumes and attach them to instances in the same Availability Zone.
- You can change the configuration of an EBS volume on the fly, such as changing its size or volume type.
- You can encrypt EBS volumes and snapshots using the AWS Key Management Service (KMS).
- You can share snapshots with other AWS accounts or make them public.
